Sustainability
Long-term harvenest

Sustainability is a core focus in the chemical industry and new formulations. Companies are now prioritizing the use of renewable raw materials, reducing hazardous substances, and optimizing processes to minimize environmental impact. Sustainable formulations aim to create products that are safer for both humans and the environment while maintaining or even enhancing performance. By adopting green chemistry principles, the chemical industry can innovate in a way that meets today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, driving both economic and environmental benefits.

BASF Method and Digital Solution for Product Carbon Footprint Calculation

To steer the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions towards net zero, it's essential to assess the reduction potential in value chains. Transparency at the product level is a key prerequisite for this goal. BASF's digital solution efficiently calculates product-specific cradle-to-gate PCFs using primary data, providing both detailed carbon footprints and transparency in production and raw material sourcing. This digital solution has successfully calculated transparent emissions data across BASF’s portfolio of around 45,000 products, navigating the complexities of chemical value chains.

HEART: Henkel Environmental Assessment Reporting Tool.
Henkel Adhesive Technologies, a global leader in adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings, is advancing sustainability through its "Sustainability Ambition 2030." The company aims to set an example with innovative technologies and ensure full transparency of its products' environmental impacts during their Cradle-to-Gate and usage phases. This end-to-end transparency, based on reliable data and international standards, is key to improving the footprint of Henkel and its customers. In collaboration with Henkel's digital team and Capgemini, Henkel has launched the "Henkel Environmental Assessment Reporting Tool" (HEART), which automatically calculates the CO2 footprint of around 58,000 products. This TÜV Rheinland-certified tool covers emissions from raw materials, production, packaging, and logistics. Ulla Hüppe, Vice President of Sustainability, states that HEART enables customers to assess the sustainability of Henkel’s products and reduce their emissions. It also supports Henkel’s goal of achieving 100% product transparency by 2030 and helps grow the portfolio of low-emission products. Henkel is also a member of sustainability initiatives such as "Together for Sustainability" and "Catena-X," working to standardize footprint calculation and data exchange in industries like automotive.
